Hatha Yoga Many modern schools of Hatha Yoga derive from the school of Sri Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, who taught from 1924 until his death in 1989. Among his students prominent in popularizing Yoga in the West were Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, famous for popularizing the vigorous Ashtanga Vinyasa style, B.K.S. Iyengar who emphasizes alignment and the use of props, Indra Devi and Krishnamacharya's son T.K.V. Desikachar who developed the Viniyoga style. Desikachar founded the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram in Chennai, with the aim of making available the heritage of yoga as taught by Krishnamacharya. Traditional Hatha Yoga is a holistic yogic path, including moral disciplines, physical exercises (e.g., asanas (postures) and Pranayama (breath control), and meditation. The Hatha yoga predominantly practiced in the West consists of mostly asanas (postures) and exercise |

Basic information for beginners What is Yoga? The word yoga means to unite or union. Most people who practice use the physical postures of yoga to purify the body and increase physical strength and stamina. How many times per week do I need to practice? If you practice for one hour each week you will experience benefits. If you can practice more your body will show the benefits quicker. The beginner should practice at least twice weekly for up to an hour and a half each session. Why is yoga different from other exercise? The physical practice of yoga is different from other exercise systems because each pose (asana) is designed to connect the movement of the body to the rhythm of the breath. When we are able to connect the breath, body and mind to the practice we become more flexible and at one with ourselves. Is yoga a religion? Yoga is not a religion it is a philosophy that began over 5,000 years ago. It is not necessary to follow the philosophy to benefit from the practice. How do I start? To begin yoga practice all you need is a willingness to learn and find the time to go to a class. There is no need for fancy clothing; shorts or sweat pants that are comfortable to move around are good enough. You may want to have a mat if you decide you want to do it regularly and it can be useful to bring a towel. Yoga practice is done in bare feet so there is no need for special footwear. Do I need to be fit? No! Yoga is for everyone and every, ability. All you need is willingness. After several sessions you will notice that your body likes the practice and physical fitness will come soon after that. |
